Media Technology

Hi! I wanted to take a moment to discuss media technology. In today's world, media technology has become more and more implemented in our everyday lives, especially at school. For teachers/professors specifically, media technology has been used in every class I've ever taken. I have read hundreds of articles online for classes, in the beginning of my college life, and still today for all my college classes. I have even had to watch movies for a grade in class, and it can be one thing, reading a book, but seeing it can expand on the understanding of the text and see what the author wanted to portray. I feel that you can't teach a class without bringing in some media that can help students understand other points of view. Most people can relate to a teacher/professor who occasionally shows a TED Talk to engage students in a topic that needs further elaboration and to warm up for a more in-depth discussion. I personally love when a TED Talk is shown in class because I have yet to watch one that didn't make me think more thoroughly about a topic. Media technology has proven to be effective in student understanding, and as a student, I appreciate the way media is incorporated in the curriculum. As the years go on, I can only hope that teachers/professors won't take media for granted because there are thousands of articles, movies, podcasts, radio stations, and even the YouTube videos of CrashCourse can be an amazing way to keep students' appreciation of a topic and benefit their understanding, and keep their drive for learning further.

  1. Hey Jesella!

First, I want to say I love your blog title! Especially because it reminds me of my book is called “ Chapter 21: The Prologue”! Aside from that, I feel I agree with your observation of how media technology can be so positive in the classroom. I’m curious if you think you have a different experience in college with tech media versus students in secondary school? Or do you think they feel similar to you in the way of feeling a connection with teachers when they use media technology, like discussing a TikTok trend in relation to a lesson or using trending language from media? I think it's important for teachers to always be learning as we teach our students, because then we can better prep ourselves with understanding what they face, but also what interests them. Where 5-minute crafts, what's funny 2016, it’s still funny, but it's not as trending as it was back then. However, the year 2016 is trending, so maybe you can use that as a reference, such as “ Please fully do and think through your projects, we don’t want any five-minute craft work”. That tells students that you are in touch with this world they are growing up in and not so far removed that you won’t “understand” them or their ideas.
